20% of marketing spend for social media is only going one way

How long will it be before social media is just called media? That might sound like a silly question but when was the last time you saw a big marketing campaign that didn't include a link to a Facebook page or a Twitter feed to follow or respond to? I saw this recent article claim that social media budgets will encompass 20% of all marketing spend in 2011. And that number, in theory should only continue to spiral upwards.

In the same way a few years ago a company without a website was considered dated and out of touch, we're soon to be a the stage where a company without a social media presence will be considered inferior.

There has been a real maturity in the use of the platforms this year and for anyone who still believes Twitter to be a place for people to tell the world about their breakfast I'd suggest logging in to see some of the business relationships and acquaintances being made on the site.

I'd be pretty surprised if it's only 20% of marketing budgets that are aimed towards the medium in 2011. And by 2012 I wouldn't be alarmed to see it closer to 40%. These networks are marketing dreams and a sales professionals window of opportunity. If you spent 2010 dismissing their value, make sure that you take another look going into the new year.

My California web designer friend taught me how to use Pinterest, one of the several social media platforms, and now I could see how much a potential this is to promote anyone's business. It's so much fun and it's not going to cost you anything.

Awesome information! I remember bringing that up at one of my online marketing web design for small business blog – if the goal is to achieve more visitors, why not use social media to market your site instead of just relying on search engine itself.
