Re-evaluating is a skill which shouldn't be overlooked
The old saying goes 'if it ain't broken don't fix it' but does that really stand up to modern day business? Those who have built up years and years of experience like to lean heavily on that, and quite rightly so, but that's not to say you shouldn't be willing to try new things. In fact the likelihood is, opening yourself up and exploring possibilities is probably what made you so successful in the first place.
It's safe to play it the way you've always played it, but like a film star who continually takes the same role, eventually you'll get pigeon holed, predictable and outdated. Sticking with the Hollywood theme (not that I'm still thinking of the Oscars or anything) the most celebrated actors and actresses are the ones that push themselves to take on new challenges and improve their abilities.
You see 'playing it safe' in offices all around the country. But playing it safe only takes you so far. There comes a point when you have to open up to new ideas regardless, as people are beginning to discover with social media. If you chose to ignore the inevitable during the wave of momentum, the chances are you'll already find yourself miles behind everybody else.
Of course, you'll say I have to say these things working at a technology start up like I do. But ask yourself when was the last time you did something rewarding without trying something different? When was the last time you improved as an individual repeating the same thing you did the day before? Whatever business you're in, adapting with the times is what will ultimately make you a stand out employee or organisation. If you get in there quick enough you can even be ground breaking, which is surely better than following the crowd?
